The Norfolk Learning Disability Partnership Board (LDPB) met to talk about important topics for people with learning disabilities in Norfolk. Hereβs a simple summary of what happened.
What We Talked About
1οΈβ£ The New Easy Read Learning Disability Plan
π’ Amanda Johnson explained how the new Learning Disability Plan was created:
- Over 7 months, more than 361 people shared their ideas.
- A draft version was shared at Locality Group meetings to check it made sense.
- The final Easy Read Plan was approved by the board.
- A detailed version will also be available on the Norfolk LD Partnership website.
π Action: The new Learning Disability Plan (2023β2028) is now complete and ready to be used.
2οΈβ£ Locality Groups Update
π£ Lucy Adcock gave an update on the Locality Groups that took place between October and November 2023.
- Amanda Johnson presented the Learning Disability Plan at these meetings.
- A new section was added called “What is happening in your locality?”, where people could share news and events.
π₯ Attendance Breakdown:
- Norwich β 6 self-advocates, 4 professionals, 5 parent/carers.
- North β 5 self-advocates, 6 professionals, no parent/carers.
- West β 14 self-advocates, 5 professionals, 2 parent/carers.
- South β 1 self-advocate, 2 professionals, 5 parent/carers.
- East β 6 self-advocates, 2 professionals, no parent/carers.
π‘ Ideas to improve attendance:
- Advertise Locality Groups in newsletters and on the radio.
- Change meeting times to suit more people.
π Action: More ways to promote Locality Groups will be explored.
3οΈβ£ Learning from Deaths Report (LeDeR Annual Report)
π©Ί Andy OβConnell shared findings from the LeDeR report, which looks at why people with learning disabilities and autism die younger.
π Key findings:
- 72 reviews were completed in Norfolk & Waveney.
- People with learning disabilities often do not receive good healthcare.
- Most common causes of death:
- Pneumonia (lung infection)
- Cancer (breast, bowel, lung cancer)
- Nearly half of all deaths could have been prevented.
π₯ What needs to improve?
- More people need a pneumonia vaccine.
- Hospitals must use the Mental Capacity Act correctly.
- More support is needed for cancer screening.
- Care staff need better training to spot when people are unwell.
π Action: The LeDeR report will continue to help improve health services for people with learning disabilities.
4οΈβ£ Social Care Online Accounts
π» Rachel Hyde-Smith talked about the new Social Care Online Accounts from Norfolk County Council.
- These accounts help people see documents and fill out forms online.
- You can choose if you want an account or not.
- To set up an account, you need an email and phone number.
β Questions asked:
- Can I update my own information? β No, a social worker must do this.
- Can I set up my own account? β Yes!
